Sport and PR? They’re more alike than you think

Honest Communications, a specialist garden and home PR agency, social media management, content creation and communications agency

It’s been almost impossible to avoid the sporting antics that have taken place over the past couple of months. The Euros flooded our TV screens with regular nail-biting, watch-through-your-fingers matches, whilst the Olympics shone a light on the individuals front flipping, back flipping and racing to achieve the seemingly impossible.

You’re probably wondering why we’re talking about javelins, gymnastics and football. It isn’t our usual topic of conversation, but after watching the athletes for the past couple of months, we can’t help but think that sport and PR aren’t all that different. Here’s why.

It’s easy to think that a game of football involves simply kicking a ball around a pitch in the hopes that it’ll eventually finds its way into the back of the net. Gymnasts seemingly jump and flip around in fancy leotards in the hopes of getting gold, and to the untrained eye, that’s exactly what they do! But behind every kick and flip, there’s years of experience and hard work, married with a well thought out strategy that gets them to the podium and PR isn’t too far removed.

Much like these sports performances, PR requires the same careful planning (although without the sparkly costumes!) in order to score the best results for clients. Whether it’s a short-term campaign or a long-term project, preparation is key. Here at Honest, we love team brainstorms to map out our game plan and establish the right strategy that will help boost our client’s presence and in our world, that’s like taking home the Premier League trophy! It takes time and careful consideration, but once it’s all in place, we can go out and deliver. Our carefully designed strategies might not win sporting tournaments, but we often secure our clients their own gold medals – coverage and lots of it!

The attributes of athletes are pretty transferable to PR professionals too. Staying calm under pressure is a vital part of winning games and scoring points and in PR, it’s important in achieving results too. Whether you’re dealing with crisis management, countless journalist requests or facing more deadlines than seems humanly possible to handle, a cool, steady attitude can help you tackle whatever pressure you’re under.

Whilst we might not be trying our hand at track running or taekwondo any time soon, we’ll always do our best to help our clients beat their competitors. So whether you’re looking for brand voice workshops, killer social strategies or creative PR campaigns, we can help you get your brand in front of the right people.
